The staff is amazing! They are so patient and kind. Whenever I visit my dad he is getting the attention and care he needs. The staff goes above and beyond!
My grandmother is in this god-awful facility. It is honestly the worst facility I’ve ever been in, and I am a nurse and have worked in several places. They say the memory care unit is a skilled unit as well, but about 60% or more of their patients have major psych issues as well. Because I’m not POA my aunt put my grandmother in here after she ran out of money because she was living in assisted-living. She used to be covered in bruises every time I would visit her double black eyes fingers, bruised forehead. They were not doing any interventions to protect her. They were claiming that she was…

Because I’m not POA my aunt put my grandmother in here after she ran out of money because she was living in assisted-living. She used to be covered in bruises every time I would visit her double black eyes fingers, bruised forehead. They were not doing any interventions to protect her. They were claiming that she was falling forward in her wheelchair. Well, if that was the case, you would make some sort of nursing intervention to correct to prevent. I had to call hospice and advocate for my grandmother to have a special chair because the Nurses here clearly don’t know how to look out for the well-being of their patients and do a little extra work. I also found my grandmother with a seeping left ear full of yellow pus, which no one seemed to know anything about major infection so clearly they do not pay attention to these patients ! My grandmother’s health has declined significant. She is bedbound and in the process of dying . When I went to visit her, she was moaning in pain doesn’t have her eyes open. Just kept moaning and crying. I asked the nurse about payment medicine. She said she wasn’t due. I said well she’s dying. You can call hospice and get her reassessed and her medication increased. I could tell she was not going to do it so I got on the phone called and they sent a nurse out to increased my grandmother’s medicine. They gave the order however the nursing facility after they received the order it took them over an hour and 15 minutes to administer this medicine because they’re incompetent . How would you like it if your loved one was suffering and you were not medicating them it’s pretty awful watching that.! in this happened repeatedly I went back the next day same thing in severe pain, whining out 😢. It’s called terminal agitation.. this place has a plethora of problems they go through Nurses quickly they have staff that is not confident to care for dying patients . Cannot stress enough not to put your loved one here. People who are dying, deserve to die with dignity and be as painfree as possible. This place does not know how to care for people and they don’t even try … When you look for an aide or a nurse, They’re sitting in this common area playing on their phones not even making rounds or checking on the patients ( this is why several call lights are going off as well) they also do not answer their phone calls which is very unethical, they will screen their calls when they know it’s a certain family member calling and just not answer, very unprofessional! They also have been cited by the state because I called in, made a complaint. When your loved one is in a facility like this, you need to keep up on it by calling anyone and everyone that you can, the ombudsman, the Department of aging, Ohio department of health. Especially if you are not the POA you have to advocate when you care about your loved one and the POA does not.
This place is incompetent. Do not put your loved one here. They do not know how to assess patients or properly care for dying patients. I have a friend who has a loved one here who is on hospice and was appalled, watching their staff just pass by her loved one’s room ignoring her cries & moaning. ( my friend face-timed me on and off for two days while she was there, I heard her grandmother, screaming, crying wailing watched her facial, grimacing it was horrible ) When she asked if they could medicate her, they said she was not due for medicine however as a healthcare provider, I know that if…

( my friend face-timed me on and off for two days while she was there, I heard her grandmother, screaming, crying wailing watched her facial, grimacing it was horrible ) When she asked if they could medicate her, they said she was not due for medicine however as a healthcare provider, I know that if a patient’s pain is not being controlled, and they are on hospice, then you need to reassess & call hospice & medicate the patient. I also have watched them ask her loved one who is incoherent most of the time who is moaning in horrible pain due to terminal agitation asking her if she would like pain medicine? Where is the nursing assessment skills? Any competent nurse knows that if a patient is incoherent and is in pain then you use your nursing assessment skills to Medicate especially hospice palliative care end of life care! These nurses are downright scary and incompetent! She came back into the room and they were cramming food down her grandmother’s mouth& left her with a mouth full of food . They are also trying to feed this dying individual soft foods? I watched as they almost caused her to choke to death and had to clean her mouth out with a toothette so she wouldn’t aspirate on the food they left in her mouth. She also has a decubitus and they are not turning her. She’s just laying on her backside on the actual bedsore. She has been in this position each time my friend visited her in 48 hours never positioned on either side. The level of incompetence ,ignorance negligence is horrid, and unfortunately, since she is not a POA, she has to sit there and advocate the best that I can and shake my head as a licensed nurse at the ignorance .. Myself as an inpatient oncology nurse this is a prime example of why you do not put your loved ones in a nursing facility because they cannot care for your loved ones at their end of life care. They simply have incompetent staff who are not have expertise with palliative care. Highbanks STAFF: FYI Let me Educate you !!! A good hospice or palliative nurse continually assesses things like: * Facial expressions and grimacing * Moaning, restlessness, agitation, or calling out * Breathing patterns (labored breathing, secretions, air hunger) * Body tension or guarding * Changes in vital signs * Signs of anxiety, fear, or terminal agitation * Skin color, circulation, and overall comfort level The goal is comfort care — not waiting until suffering becomes severe. In hospice, medications are often adjusted based on ongoing assessment and symptom burden, not just a rigid schedule. If a patient appears uncomfortable before the next scheduled dose, the nurse should assess whether PRN medications, dosage adjustments, or provider notification are needed. Educate yourself and get out of nursing if you can’t properly care for the dying patient !! Shame on you the facility also because you are money hungry and keeping those you are not adequately caring for !
I would not recommend sending your loved one here, especially for someone with dementia. The environment is extremely chaotic and loud, which can be very distressing and confusing for residents who need a calmer, more structured setting, and it does not feel designed with memory care in mind. This is further reflected in the mix of residents, as some individuals appear to have mental health conditions that differ from dementia-related needs, creating an even more disruptive and unsuitable environment for those requiring specialized, dementia-focused care. Visitors should be prepared to wait outside for extended periods of time on weekends. On multiple occasions we had to stand outside for at least 10 minutes before anyone came to the door to let us in. The nursing care was also concerning. Staff frequently defaulted to saying the patient had the "right to refuse" care, even when the patient clearly lacked the mental capacity to make those decisions. Instead of attempting alternative approaches to help the patient accept care, it often felt like this was used as an excuse to avoid the effort required to properly assist someone with dementia. Cleanliness is another issue. At first glance the facility may appear tidy, but once you start paying attention to the details it becomes clear the place could use a thorough deep cleaning. During visits, we also witnessed other residents calling out for help for extended periods of time without any response from staff. In one particularly concerning situation, a resident went into the bathroom and had an accident that left the area unsanitary and with a strong odor. He was calling out for assistance, yet no one came to help him for quite some time. It was upsetting to witness. Be cautious about bringing personal belongings, as clothing went missing and was never recovered, even after discharge. The patient we were responsible for was ultimately removed from the facility after two weeks, which already felt far too long. By that time, he had developed a Stage 1 bedsore and a significant diaper rash. Staff attributed this to the patient refusing care, but in a dementia setting that is exactly when trained caregivers should be using appropriate techniques and persistence to ensure basic hygiene and repositioning needs are met. Overall, our experience on the secured memory care side was extremely disappointing and concerning. Based on what we personally observed, the care and environment were nowhere near what would reasonably be expected from a facility carrying a 5-star Medicare rating. That rating does not appear to reflect the reality of the memory care unit and should be reevaluated so that other families are not misled or placed in the same situation we experienced.
This place is amazing! There aren’t very many places that can do what this team does. They communicate with us about everything with our mom and are quick to answer all of our questions and concerns! The nurse managers are very thorough and the social worker does an incredible job of helping us get through our my mom’s ever changing situation. People are hard on this team, not understanding that the residents here are the same ones who can’t stay home and have been rejected by other nursing homes. My mom loves the food and is finally, consistently putting on a healthy amount of weight. The Administrator works really hard to keep the building running smoothly! My mom loves painting, bingo and going to communion! The activities area is growing and improving everyday under the new activity director! I found out just today that, according to Medicaid, Highbanks is a 5 star facility and they just had their annual state survey and got their best EVER results! This building has thrived under its new leadership team!!! We love it here!
Do not take your loved one here. They rarely answer the telephone. The staff is extremely rude especially those that answer the telephone. This place is extremely dirty, the resident's are not cared for and the staff they blantently ignore the residents. Every time I visit, my feet stick to the floor and the staff are sitting around texting on their phone. A friend of mine has a relative here and we visited this awful place. The alzheimers unit is so depressing with its manilla walls and the residents are not involved in any type of activities. As someone who worked with the elderly in facilities, most have activities, calming music, decent decor, and attentive staff. This place has none of these. Everytime we visit, the residents are either extremely agitated or appear to be overmedicated. They also hit each other and there is no staff around most of the time. They are also dirty, half dressed , reminds me of an insane asylum.. Take your loved ones somewhere else!!
Very welcoming staff and extremely helpful
Staff is great. New management really cares for the resident and staff. Their administrator is awsome!
