I am writing this review as a concerned family member of a current resident at the Oakwood at Otterbein Pemberville, this assisted living facility in Pemberville, Ohio. I am writing this review as a concerned family member of a current resident at the Oakwood at Otterbein Pemberville, this assisted living facility in Pemberville, Ohio. I feel it is important that other families considering this facility are aware of the severe, systemic neglect and ongoing safety issues within this facility and actions so worrisome that we had to report them to state authorities and regulatory agencies Before placing a loved one here, please read our ongoing experience. My grandmother has been placed on a combination of multiple sedating medications that leave her excessively drowsy, unable to communicate, and unable to advocate for herself. Rather than addressing the root causes of her symptoms, the facility appears to rely on heavy sedation to manage behavior and keep residents quiet, constituting chemical restraint, not appropriate medical care. They have deliberately isolated my grandmother from close family, which has been one of the most distressing aspects of our experience. They lost her hearing aid, failed to set up a specialized phone for hearing-impaired individuals, despite the phone being provided by family, and have refused to allow her to use the facility phone to call us or speak to us when we call. Because of this we bought her a mobile phone she could use to keep in touch with family. She wanted a personal camera in her room for safety reasons, and so that we could check in on her from time to time, and after only 4 days a staff aide unplugged it before responding to or providing any medical assistance to my grandmother during a respiratory crisis. The priority appeared to be preventing the family from witnessing the event rather than caring for the resident. After multiple attempts to report our concerns to upper management, we have yet to receive any communication from them nor have they addressed any of our urgent concerns nearly 3 weeks later, which left us no choice but to report their actions and neglect to the appropriate agencies/authorities. Once facility staff and management became aware of this, they confiscated my grandmother’s mobile phone and told us that we can no longer talk to her. All of this without a reasonable explanation or medical or legal justification. Cruelly cutting off all contact has left my grandmother completely isolated, a clear act of retaliation because we spoke up to protect her. Summary: This facility uses chemical restraints, complete isolation, and device confiscation as retaliation against families who report any concerns of neglect or abuse. I strongly urge any family to do thorough due diligence and look elsewhere. Do not entrust this facility with your loved ones life.
I want to give a shout out to “Jessica” my nurse’s aide for a couple days of my stay (2/7) - you are an amazing care giver on all levels. Thank you.
Otterbein Pemberville gave my mom caring, excellent and compassionate care when we most needed it. They are our angels. My mother, disabled by her illnesses, lived with dignity and was cared for at this facility. Mom loved the homecooked food. It was delicious. My mom was blessed, until her last breath, by being a resident at Otterbein.
1. I just went to the Thanksgiving brunch yesterday and the food was horrible. The cook spent more time roaming the dining hall and pushing his religion on all of his guests rather than making sure his food was good. It was arguably the worst thanksgiving dinner I've ever had. 2. The nurses here were horrible and neglectful of my grandfather to the point he was kicked out and sent to a psych ward because of their treatment of him. 3. Overpriced.
I retracted my review, they treat u great for about a week, to get a good review!! Then all hell breaks loose, I had a horrible experience, so many things, they would take meds away my heart dr. Gave to me, was getting weaker n sicker, n they wouldn't do anything, just ignored me, therapy was going good until review came out, I was so sick I couldn't eat very much, sick to stomach. No help n I couldn't figure it out. ( but I did ) .one aid said I was bleeding real bad, pur blood no urine, for 3 days then decided to do urine test, a man nurse gave me results after Noone else would do, he said I was complete mess, red blood cells white counts n few other things were through the roof n really bad. Took another 2 to 3 days for their dr. To give me antibiotics for a week. Blood work after that n wouldn't give me results, n I was so weak from all my therapy went down n only 5 steps then. They kept saying I kept refusing to do things, total lies. I have a very bad heart n dr. Was stopping me on meds n giving me what he wanted. My heart dr. Is in Cleveland clinic. Had a ekg n would not give me test results. I already knew back in a fib. Butt was very red n couple sores but wanted me to sit in wheelchair n would scream at me I said absolutely not I an so sick, n sick can't do anything. I ate like half bowl of broth n soup, couldn't handle anymore food, for bout 2 to 3 weeks, they cared less, it goes on n on, but to the end Oct 22nd I believe. ( 1st I had got ahold of my heart dr. N explain all to him. His nurse replied for me to go to hospital, so I told them. Insurance said Oct 25th last day nurse was yelling n screaming at me, why go hospital n if I did it would be a leave n she wouldn't give me nothing, could not discharge myself cause I would get no medical records n any meds the had on chart n kept bugging me, my Dr. In Cleveland said get to hospital. I told her n why n was in contact with my son n he looked up couple things n got advice. N I told them I was going to hosp. Again get me aid get myself ready to call 911. Told her I wanted my personal medicine she had n she kept screaming at me she was not going to do it, I said against the law. She saw ambulance come n took off, everyone did, Noone in site, took me to hosp. N my potassium was so low 2.8 hosp. Was critical, had put 6 bags of it in my IV immediately, waiting on ultra sound on my heart can be very dangerous, lots more to be revealed, I surest do not go there. I would of died...Robin Basilius.
Hats off to the professionals at the Rehab. and Therapy departments. We thank you so much!
Everyone has been so kind.
Top-notch care. From the aides to nursing to rehab staff, everyone was a step above. Even the food was much better than most nursing facilities. These folks show what is possible when there is a desire to be the best.
