This place has gone downhill since last fall. My father is in this place after a fall. Anyone that spends more than 10 minutes there realizes the level of care is bad. It was much better last year when both of my parents were in there recovering from falls/illness. I am not sure they have enough staff (it certainly doesn't seem like it). The cost of places like this is astronomical and it seems like they can't staff it properly which makes me think they dont pay well or treat their staff like crap.
It would be zero stars but I don’t have that option. This place is horrible. The so called wound specialist, who is also director of nursing, had no idea of what to do with my dad’s wound vac. I had to tell them it wasn’t working and he was bleeding through the bandage. When she did come to his room she pretty much ripped the dressings off. He’s 92, on blood thinners and has thin skin. She definitely hurt him when she did it. Gave him a pain med that he was allergic to and didn’t notify me for three days. He got out of bed during night and was yelled at twice by an aide. They have no right to…

They have no right to yell at them like that. I don’t do it as a caregiver therefore they shouldn’t either. Director of nursing left him standing alone in his room trying to use the restroom when he wasn’t supposed to be left alone. He was a very high fall risk and they knew this. He fell several times while there. When he went in for rehab they said he would be taken to dining hall and common room each day. That never happened. Every day he was there he got worse. He seemed like he was being doped up so they wouldn’t have to worry about him. If you put family here, please visit them as often as you can and be their advocate for better care. My heart goes out to the people who are still there. Chenel, a nurse, was super nice and caring as were a couple others. DON should go through more training if she’s going to call herself a “wound specialist “.

Great Staff. Wonderful choice for caring for your loved ones.
“Compassionate Care and Supportive Environment” Altercare Newark South may be a smaller facility, but that’s part of what makes it so special. With only 48 beds, the staff can truly give each resident and short-term rehabilitation patient more personalized attention. I’ve found that the team goes above and beyond to create a warm and welcoming environment where patients feel cared for like family. The nursing and rehabilitation staff are attentive, professional, and patient-focused. They take the time to understand individual needs, communicate clearly with families, and provide compassionate support throughout the recovery process. The fact that the facility participates in both Medicare and Medicaid also makes care accessible to more families in the community. While Altercare Newark South is not part of a large continuing care community, this independence allows the team to focus on individualized, resident-centered care. The staff build strong relationships with residents and families, which creates a supportive and encouraging atmosphere that truly helps in the healing journey. If you are looking for a place in Newark, OH, that offers quality care, personal attention, and a smaller, more home-like setting for rehabilitation or long-term needs, I would highly recommend Altercare Newark South.
