My client left Windsor Place in Lancaster because it was an objectively terrible place to exist. She moved with the radical, apparently unrealistic hope of living rather than merely surviving a slow-motion hazard experiment. Unfortunately, she landed in another building operating under the same business model: collect rent, ignore reality, and act shocked when things go wrong. She has had bed bugs in both locations. Before the usual excuses start flying, she is a clean woman. She is not a hoarder, she does not live in filth, and she is not the problem. The buildings are. This location may be…
My client left Windsor Place in Lancaster because it was an objectively terrible place to exist. This location may be slightly cleaner than Windsor Place, but that’s like bragging about having fewer roaches in the kitchen. Both places are plagued with nonstop indoor smoking—cigarettes, marijuana, and meth—apparently treated as protected activities rather than violations. The walls were swabbed and tested according to instructions from her oxygen supplier. Their response was refreshingly honest: she is in danger while using her oxygen due to the constant smoking. Oxygen plus open flames is not a complex equation, yet here we are, pretending this is a matter of opinion. Windsor Place has already had three fires in the past year, all caused by smoking. Three. One would think that repeated fires might prompt management, owners, or anyone with a pulse and a calculator to take notice. Instead, the lesson seems to be that it’s cheaper to ignore the problem until something burns down—again. Stepping out of her apartment, the hallways are so saturated with smoke that it’s impossible to pretend ignorance. You don’t need lab results—you can smell it, breathe it, and feel it cling to your clothes. But acknowledging the problem would require action, and action might cost money. Clearly, that’s asking too much. So instead, residents with medical equipment are placed at risk, basic safety rules are treated as suggestions, and management continues to play dumb while cashing checks. It’s not neglect by accident. It’s neglect by design.
I left a message on Tuesday and the office manager called back the following day. Set up an appointment for next week.
